Australia is a very large country. But did you know that more than three quarters of the Australian population of about 22 million people live within one hour’s drive of the coastline and that more than 85% of those live in a coastal strip 50 km wide by 4,700 km long between Cairns in Queensland and Adelaide in South Australia?
Australia is the only country in the world, which is also a whole continent, governed from its capital Canberra with currently only about 350,000 inhabitants but fast growing.
All Australian banknotes, namely for the value of $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100, are made out of plastic, more durable and longer lasting than banknotes from paper.
The world’s longest golf course is in Australia (among so many other big things). It is an 18-hole par golf course with a length of 1365 km – about 850 miles (no typo) and with one hole in each settlement on its course.
Fraser Island, off the Queensland coast, is the world’s largest sand island with a length of 123 km. It is included in the World Heritage List.
Kangaroos in Australia are a tough species, dating back 30,000,000 years. So they are more than 100 times longer around than mankind.
When European explorers arrived in Australia and saw some strange animals the first time, they asked the aborigines about their name, and they replied, ‘Kangaroo’, the aboriginal name for ‘I don’t understand’. The aborigines have a different name for them, namely wallabies.
Kangaroos can swim very well, if they need to.
Did you know that the Aborigines of Australia have been living in the country since about 40,000 years? This is far, far longer ago than when the first pyramid in Egypt was built. After arriving, they must have adapted very well to the environment, otherwise they could not have endured over such a long time.
The Koala is one of the unique animals of the Australian continent, looking a bit like teddy bears. Koalas only eat eucalyptus leaves and never drink water. The moisture in the leaves is sufficient for them.
Koalas have fingerprints like humans. Actually they look very similar to human fingerprint and can be mistaken for them.
Did you know that the only country with wild camels roaming through the wilderness is Australia? There could be about one million of them (no typo). Some of the wild camels are selected and domesticated from time to time as transport animals and for camel races.
Apart from the kangaroo and the emu, Australia has some other strange animals like the platypus and the echidna. They lay eggs but give their young milk like other mammals after hatching.
Australia has her own devil, namely a wild animal, called the Tasmanian devil, so called after its fierce behaviour. The ears of the Tasmanian devil turn kind of red if it is in stress or gets angy.
Australia is the driest continent apart from the Antarctic. About 75% of the interior is very marginal land or desert because of lack of rain and almost uninhabitable.
Did you know that all Australian rivers together usually carry less water than the Mississippi?
