There have been all sorts of disputes or even war between different groups of people probably since the beginning of mankind. At first there may have been just arguments between clans and tribes, later more serious wars between increasingly larger groups and in the end between whole countries, even at present.
There can be a variety of causes for a war; sometimes fear of the other nation, but one of the reasons – I believe – is to increase the power base and the sphere of influence for the initiating country. Such a nation, starting a war, is already strong or feels strong at that time and believes it can win. Its people, initially not in favour of a war, are then occasionally manipulated and stirred up against the ‘enemy’ by some members of the ruling class and misused to carry out the war regardless of all the sufferings involved.
I think terrorism is different from war insofar, as it operates more in the dark and damages property more randomly, but it also hurts mostly innocent people for just to make a point or to achieve a purpose. There can be religious or ethnic causes or simply revenge for a wrong suffered before.
War or terrorism can also begin with unrest, started by groups feeling disadvantaged. The great injustice in both cases - war and terrorism - is, however, that often a great number of innocent people are targeted and have to suffer.
Both war and terrorism are unnatural and inhuman! They should not occur at all, if everybody, particularly people with power and influence, were reasonable. Consider the fact, that we are all the same; our genes are almost entirely alike. Slight racial differences like colour of the skin, looks etc. should not count at all!
It is high time to stop the crime of making war or committing acts of terrorism! We humans are one people on a tiny planet in the infinite universe. If we continue behaving in this inhuman way, thereby using increasingly terrible and lethal weapons, we will reach the point of no return. If that happens, we’ll wipe us out and with us the perhaps only intelligent species in the universe. This would surely be the greatest blunder of all times!
In the following I will try to give some ideas and new concepts for how to solve the problem of war and terrorism. I would be happy to help anybody with providing more ideas and concepts including preparing a detailed plan as described on my web page World Problems .
Ideas and concepts for solving the problem
1. Make the United Nations more powerful and more effective
1. Review its current rules, regulations and guidelines. Find out what has worked or hasn’t worked until now and make improvements.
2. Delete obsolete regulations and make new ones, adapted to modern life and present challenges.
3. Each country as member of the UN has to agree to and to sign outlawing war and terrorism and to act on it.
4. Give the UN more power and mobility to enforce its rules quickly and comprehensively.
Comment: Unfortunately, power is sometimes abused (misused) and more power can lead to more abuses. To prevent this happening, I suggest to create a group of highly competent, ethical and respectable people as guards the UN should be accountable to. This may ensure that the UN always strives to be clean and fair with its activities, especially necessary when dealing with weak countries.
2. The UN should deal effectively with unrest
1. There should be observers as specialists from the UN in all countries, regarded as unstable. They should have good connections with the government of the country and they must be highly experienced, have the best equipment for their task and get all the relevant information they need. In addition, they should keep in close contact with the people.
2. The specialists also should have the authority to deal with small trouble themselves and to mediate between parties in a peaceful way.
3. The specialists should recognize larger unrests in the early stages and notify their superiors in the UN immediately. They should also submit a plan about how to deal with the unrest.
4. The UN then should then respond quickly with all the necessary manpower, gear and weapons. This has to be done in close contact with the government of the country.
3. Remove or alleviate obvious causes for unrest
1. I think it is important to listen to disadvantaged groups in the first place to find out what they really need, and satisfy their needs if reasonable and possible.
1. Special organizations should help communities to get a better life by reducing poverty and hunger as described in one of my articles before.
2. Keep people on the land by creating jobs for them in their communities and by making them independent. This may reduce unrest in the cities.
4. The UN should mediate between countries
1. Arguments between countries must be put in writing by the involved governments and be submitted to the UN for settlement prior to acting on them. The parties must be bound by the decision of the UN.
2. The same should apply for different religious and ethnic groups.
3. The UN must help an attacked country or group and warn the attacker accordingly in advance. If the warning is not heeded, the UN should act swiftly and decisively.
5. Religious leaders should meet regularly
1. The leaders taking part in the meeting must study the teachings also of other religions in order to understand them better and to tolerate and respect the other religions.
2. They must prepare the points at issue before the meeting, discuss their grievances and resolve them, either already in the meeting or soon afterwards.
3. The religious leaders must renounce all violence and commit to settle all disputes in a peaceful way.
4. They must instruct their clergy accordingly with the goal to teach their members peace and harmony and to ban violence or encouraging violence. The clergy or members should not try to impose their beliefs on members of other religions but respect the choice of people with different beliefs. They and their governments must guarantee religious freedom for all.
